The Edwardsville YMCA is able to provide the community the ability to swim year-round! The Esic Center houses 2 indoor pools that are used for lap swimming, lessons, team practices, parties and more! The Meyer Center has an outdoor pool that is open during the summer months and is used for members and their guests, summer campers and party-goers.

Parent/Child & Preschool Classes (6 months - 5 years)

WE HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN HOW TO SWIM

CHILDREN AGES 7 & UNDER MUST HAVE A PARENT OR GUARDIAN IN THE POOL AREA WHILE YOUR CHILDREN ARE TAKING LESSONS.

PARENT/CHILD CLASSES (AGES 6 MONTHS - 3 YEARS)

All classes will orientate both parents and children to water safety skills.
**Disposable diapers are not permitted in pools. Swim diapers are required to be worn by children not yet potty trained. They are available for purchase at the Service Desk.**

SHRIMP (6-8 MONTHS)
An introduction to water, including safe exploration. Includes songs, games and basic water skills. (30 min)

EEL (LEVEL 1) (3 - 5 YEARS)
This class is designed for children who are comfortable in the water. They are taught kicking, floating and progressive paddle strokes. Children must be able to swim across the pool on their front with their face in and without assistance and on their back without assistance to move to the next level. (Ray) (50 min 6:1 ratio)

RAY (LEVEL 2) (3-5 YEARS)
This level builds on previously learned skills while adding endurance by swimming on both the front and the back. Treading water and rotary breathing are introduced. Children must be able to swim Front Crawl with beginning Rotary Breathing 1 width, Elementary Backstroke 1 width, and also demonstrate Back Crawl without assistance to move to the next level. (Starfish) (50 min 6:1 ratio)

STARFISH (LEVEL 3) (3-5 YEARS)
This level refines strokes as well as personal safety. Endurance is improved upon and new skills are taught. Children must be able to swim 25 yards, (1 length), of each, Front Crawl with rotary breathing, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, and also demonstrate Side-stroke to move to the next level. POLLIWOG (BEGINNER)
This class is designed for new swimmers to learn safe pool behavior and basic independent swimming skills. Children must be able to swim in their front with their face in the proper body position and on their back for 1 length and also demonstrate Sidestroke to move to the next level. (Guppy) (50 min 6:1 ratio)

GUPPY (LEVEL 1)
This level teaches proper stroke technique for a variety of strokes and builds endurance. Rotary breathing and diving skills are also taught. Children must be able to swim 25 yards (1 length) of Front Crawl with rotary breathing and 25 yards of Back Crawl without assistance and also demonstrate Sidestroke to move tot the next level. (Minnow) (50 min. 6:1 ratio)

MINNOW (LEVEL 2)
This level refines all previously learned strokes and continues to build endurance by swimming multiple laps. Rotary breathing is also perfected at this level while diving skills are improved. Children must be able to swim Front and Back Crawl 50 yards (2 lengths) with proper form and breathing as well as 50 yards of Sidestroke, and Elementary Backstroke, and 25 yards of proper Breaststroke to move to the next level. (Fish) (50 min 6:1 ratio)

FISH (LEVEL 3)
This level further refines all previously learned skills with an emphasis on endurance. The butterfly technique is introduced along with rescue skills. Children must swim 50 yards of each stroke with proper technique without stopping and 25 yards of Butterfly kicks to move to the next level. (Flying Fish) (50 min 6:1 ratio)

FLYING FISH (ADVANCED LEVEL)
Continuation of previously learned skills and endurance is the emphasis in this level. The butterfly stroke is worked on more also. Children must be able to swim 100 yards (4 lengths) of the front and back crawl, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and breast stroke with proper form. The butterfly is done with assistance for 25 yards (1 length) to move to the next level. (Shark) (50 min 6:1 ratio)

SHARK (BEGINNING LEADERSHIP LEVEL)
This level is where perfection of stroke technique and maintaining endurance is the emphasis. New strokes include inverted breaststroke, trudgen crawl, and the overarm side-stroke. Children must be able to swim 100 yards each (4 lengths) of front and back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, and 25 yards of butterfly with excellence to move to the next level. (Pre Competitive) (50 min 6:1 ratio)

SPECIAL NEEDS WITH CAREGIVER (AGES 6 - 12)
This class is designed to create a safe environment for learning water safety, along with the basic swimming fundamentals for people with special needs. The caregiver needs to accompany the child in the water.

Private and Semi-Private Lessons are designed to help students overcome specific problems that they are experiencing. The goal is to mainstream the child back into group lessons. Due to high demand, placement is based on instructor availability, we appreciate your patience and understanding. PRE-COMPETITIVE SWIM (AGES 6 - 12)

Looking for a great introduction to the YMCA Breakers Swim Team program? This pre-competitive swim class will be led by a swim team coach & will prepare swimmers for the YMCA competitive swim team. The class emphasis is on developing & refining the mechanics of the four competitive strokes & increasing endurance.

Drop in AquaticsAll water exercise patrons must check in at the front desk for a wristband and bring it to class with them. Unless noted all classes are co-ed and drop-in. All Pre-Registration Classes are subject to cancellation do to insufficient enrollment. The Class fee is non-refundable whether you miss a class due to absence or weather (including lightning). If the YMCA Aquatics department cancels the class due to instructor absence, etc. a refund will be given. This event held at the Esic YMCA location.

MASTERS SWIM WORKOUT
Intermediate/Advanced Drop-in Class For adults interested in improving their competitive swimming skills & strokes. This class can better prepare you for an upcoming triathlon, master’s swimming meet or simply enjoy the pleasure of working out with other swimmers.

ARTHRITIS EXERCISE
Performance of exercises in the water to increase joint mobility, improve muscular strength, and increase vitality. The goal is easier joint movement to carry out daily activities. HOW TO BECOME A YMCA LIFEGUARD

LIFEGUARDING PRECOURSE SKILLS

This class is designed to prepare you for the pre-skills test.

LIFEGUARDING CLASS (AGES 5-21)
Three swimming-skills prerequisites evaluate overall swimming strength, endurance & comfort in the water; and the ability to meet the time requirements.

  1. Perform a 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both; swimming on the back or side is not permitted, swim goggles are allowed.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using the legs only (no hands), without support and without stopping; the head must remain above the surface of the water.
  3. Without goggles, start in the water and swim 20 yards (face in or out of water); head-first or feet-first surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object; return to the surface and swim on their back to the starting point with both hands holding the object. Must keep the face at or near the surface and be able to get a breath; may not swim the distance underwater, or use the bottom of the pool for help, and must exit the water without using a ladder or steps. 

If a candidate is not successful on the first attempt, there is only one opportunity to reattempt the prerequisites after a sufficient rest. Entry into the Red Cross Lifeguarding course is strictly limited to those who meet the minimum age requirement and successfully complete the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. Failure to have attained the appropriate skill level could pose a safety threat to the class and the individual. This class will certify individuals who successfully complete the prerequisite and successfully complete the course. Lifeguard Candidates must be 15 yrs of age on or before the course end date. The course consists of both written and performance tests.To register for the class you must make 2 payments: The first is a $35 NON Refundable fee, the remaining balance of $215 is paid AFTER the prerequisites have been completed. PARTICIPANTS MUST ATTEND ALL CLASSES. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UPS.

LIFEGUARD REVIEW COURSE FOR RE-CERTIFICATION

Individuals with a current lifeguarding/ first aid/cpr/aed or shallow water lifeguarding/ first aid/cpr/aed certificate may participate in a review course. Must be current to date of class.

Allowing individuals the opportunity to review the course content within a formal course setting. The review course format optimizes a participant’s ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skills evaluations. The review course will consist of all prerequisites for the Lifeguard Class, as well as the written final exams and in water skill evaluation. The responsibility for preparing for the final written exam is that of the participant.

Swim TeamSWIM TEAM (AGES 5-21)

LEVEL I (AGES 5-11)
Level I swim team is geared mainly for swimmers ages 11 and under or swimmers with limited Swim Team experience. It is beneficial, but not necessary, for these swimmers to be familiar with the four competitive strokes and have had past swim team experience or involvement in our Intro to Swim Team program. The main emphasis for this level is on refining competitive swim skills and teaching skills not yet learned. At this level, technique of competitive swimming skills is vital. Once techniques are learned, the group will begin to concentrate on training and racing.

LEVEL II (AGES 11-13)
Level II Swim Team is geared for swimmers ages 11-13 or swimmers with several years of year round competitive experience. Swimmers at this level should be able to perform all four strokes according to USS Rules. The emphasis for this group will change as the season progresses. Stroke technique will be the main emphasis early in the season. Later in the season, this group will concentrate on training and reaching goals set for competition.

LEVEL III (AGES 12-14)
Level III Swim Team is mainly geared for swimmers ages 12-14 or swimmers with several years of year round competitive experience. Swimmers at this level should be able to perform all four strokes according to USS Rules. The emphasis for this group will change as the season progresses. Swimmers with YMCA Area cut times or Ozark Championships cut times will fit into this group. Stroke technique will be the main emphasis early in the season. Later in the season, this group will concentrate on training and reaching goals set for competition.

SENIOR LEVEL (AGES 13-21)
Level III Swim Team is mainly geared for swimmers ages 12-14 or swimmers with several years of year round competitive experience. Swimmers at this level should be able to perform all four strokes according to USS Rules. The emphasis for this group will change as the sea-son progresses. Swimmers with YMCA Area cut times or Ozark Championships cut times will fit into this group. Stroke technique will be the main emphasis early in the season. Later in the season, this group will concentrate on training and reaching goals set for competition.

Pool Schedules

SPLISH, SPLASH AT THE POOL

These pool are open year round (unless annual maintenance is being performed). Pool #1 is a 6 lane, 25 yard pool ranging from a shallow end of 3 feet to a deep end of 11.5 feet. The water temperature is consistently between 81 and 84 degrees. Pool #2 is a 4 lane, 25 yard pool ranging from 3 to 5 feet in depth and is handicap accessible. Water temperature is between 88 and 89 degrees. These pools are open to everyone (there are member only swim times listed in the schedules below).

Meyer Center Outdoor PoolMEYER CENTER OUTDOOR POOL

This pool is open during the summer. This pool is a 4 lane, 25 yard pool ranging from a shallow end of 3 feet to a deep end of 5 feet. The water temperature is consistently around 80 degrees. It also houses two slides for children to enjoy and lounge chairs, as well. This pool is open to members only, but non-members are welcome if they have a member present. The outdoor pool is now closed for the season.
