The Arts and Humanities program is very diverse; allowing individuals to explore their creativity and even bring out talents that they didn’t realize they possessed. Classes in areas such as art, dance, theatre and photography are available for different age and skill levels and can be found on the pages below.

YOUTH ART CLASSES

DRAWING & PAINTING (AGES 7+)
This class will focus on using a variety of mediums to learn to draw and paint!

This class will learn basic sewing and finger and arm knitting to create projects.

SENSORY PLAY (AGES 6 MONTHS - 2 YEARS)
For babies & families who want to experience sensory play. Class will focus on Jumbo Crayon coloring, sensory bottles/bags, finger painting, water play and other activities. Parent Helper Needed.

EDWARDSVILLE ARTS CENTER CLASSES

WHEEL THROWING (AGES 11+)
The Edwardsville Arts Center (EAC) invites your kids to spend some Mondays with Miss Brandy and learn the beginning techniques while also exploring the potter’s wheel. We will start the first class with making a plate, and then in subsequent classes we will build on those skills to make bowls, cups and maybe a spoon or two. Our final class will be spent glazing all of our pieces. This allows pieces to become food, dishwasher and microwave-safe. Our classes will be held in the Edwardsville High School in classroom D120 (one of EHS’s Art classrooms). Your child can pick up all of their finished pieces on the week following our last class at the EHS’s EAC.

MY VERY OWN BALLET (AGE 3)
A great way to gear up for Pre-Ballet, this independent class teaches basic stretching, barre, leaps, jumps, fun terminology and dance activities in a nurturing environment.

Class will focus on basic concepts of rhythm and movement along with spatial awareness, listening skills, group socialization and structure. Students will strengthen their bodies and learn coordination in this fun engaging class to introduce the love of dance.

Dress up like your favorite princess and learn ballet. Each week we will focus on a different princess. Class
teaches coordination, balance, ballet steps, dance discipline and practice in a positive environment.

NEW OFFERING

Y PERFORMING ARTS COMPANY (YPAC)
This class is performance based while using skills that have been developed and mastered through Level 2 Ballet. In order to participate in this company you should also be enrolled in the Thursday night Level 2 Ballet class. The group will focus on learning dance routines that will be performed throughout the community. For example: city events, nursing homes and other venues will showcase their dance abilities. The goal is to foster a deeper love of dance for those that are ready for the next level. Performers MUST be at least 6 years old, in Level 2 Ballet and mastered a majority of Level 2 Ballet skills from previous sessions. MUST BE DIRECTOR APPROVED. MUSIC EXPLORERS (AGES 6 MONTHS - 2 YEARS)
Parent and child will explore new and familiar songs, nursery rhymes, and finger plays. Discovering together ways to use voice, movement, and instruments to create music.

MUSIC DISCOVERERS (AGES 2 - 4)
This is the perfect next step for Music Explorers who are ready to move and shake on their own, gaining independence with instruments and finding their own voice. Those new to music will also love this upbeat class. We will discover together more of the how’s and why’s in the music they love. Age 2 and 3 will need a parent helper.

GUITAR (AGES 7 - 12)
Learn guitar basics in this class as we learn cords and beginner guitar songs. Music will be provided, but students will need to bring their own guitar. JR. THEATRE (AGES 4 - 7) 
This is the perfect introduction to theatre for any young actor. Each week we will participate in exercises and games that will develop all the skills needed for the stage. As a group, we will take a favorite story and turn it into a play to be performed at the end of the session. ONLY OFFERED WINTER 1 & 2!

YMCA THEATRE PRESENTS...TALE OF BEAUTY & THE BEAST (AGES 7+)
As our version of the well-known story goes, a poor widow plucks a forbidden rose from the cursed Beast’s castle grounds and he sentences her to death as punishment. In this adaptation, we meet the widow’s two distasteful daughters and greedy son-in-laws who hear her “insane” story and don’t believe a word of it. But
her third daughter, Beauty, goes to Beast and promises to stay if her mother’s life is spared. You’ll be moved by Beast’s eventual transformation back into a loving prince and you’ll find thrills and humor when the two son-in-laws slink into the eerie castle and end up engaging in a battle with enchanted furniture!

UPSTAGE AT THE Y PRESENTS...TALES OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON
(AGES 13+) *NEW PROGRAM*

From an assortment of surprise packages comes four very special gifts...the gifts of storyteller Hans Christian Andersen to the children of the world. Out of a bright birthday box steps ’The Steadfast Tin Soldier’ to tell of his undying love for a paper dancing doll. A dilapidated old crate yields the comic tale of ’The Swineherd’ who spurns a royal princess and from a basket of eggs comes the well-loved story of ’The

Safe SitterSAFE SITTER (AGES 11+)
Calling all baby-sitters 11 and up! This nationally recognized, medically accurate, hands-on class teaches boys and girls how to handle emergencies such as injury management and choking rescue while caring for children. Students will learn the basics of childcare through games, activities and role play. Course includes a Safe Sitters tote bag starter kit and manual ($30 value). Class size is limited. Pizza will be provided for lunch.
